Child Restraint and Safety at Windham School

posted Nov 12, 2013, 5:42 AM by Admin Windham

This is a letter to parents regarding the use of car seats on field trips. This topic came up recently and as a staff, we felt it needed to be looked into further. Mrs. Kehoe decided to call the state police to get current and accurate information.

When Mrs. Kehoe spoke to the man at the state office, he said the first way you want to think about transporting a child without the proper restraints is not the fine that you would pay, but what would happen if there was an accident and someone was killed. We know, this is rather graphic, but that is the way we are approaching field trips from now on.

If smaller students are to be allowed on a field trip that does not involve the bus, they must have a car seat. This is to be provided by the parents to the school on the day of the trip. If the parents do not have one, arrangements need to be made before the day of the trip to ensure a seat will be available. We hope to get a collection of seats here at the school for just this purpose, but as of now we do not have any. Therefore, it is up to parents to make sure their child has a seat here at school the day of a scheduled trip. This also must be considered during winter sports.  Students may not ride in cars with other parents unless they have the proper seat.

Most information we found said to keep your child in a booster seat until he or she is big enough to fit in a seat belt properly. For a seat belt to fit properly the lap belt must lie snugly across the upper thighs, not the stomach. The shoulder belt should lie snug across the shoulder and chest and not cross the neck or face. Remember: your child should still ride in the back seat, because it is safer there.

Law is really not the most important issue, safety is.  This issue was brought up at the board meeting for them to consider. They decided that any student without a seat on the day of a trip, will not be able to participate.

If you have any other suggestions or input about this topic, please feel free to share it with us. More importantly, if you have any extra car seats, please feel free to share them with us, so we have a supply here and no student misses out.
