Habits of Mind: “Safe, Responsible, Respectful, Ready to learn”

February vacation is coming right up, the week of the February 15th through 19th.

Leland and Gray budget passed. Thank you to everyone who voted.

Friday nights Potluck/classroom presentation, dance and skating was a hit. The food was varied and excellent. The presentation by Sally, Leigh, Beth and Naciim was informational and interesting for the crowd.   Surprisingly, there were no cases of stage fright when the kids got up to read their animal’s stories, or poems.   With a little bribery (such as you earn a chance to do the cupcake walk by dancing) we had great participation from students during the dance. Everyone got a cupcake and then topped the evening off outdoors skating. Brrrr, there was a brisk wind and it was the parents who decided to ring the bell that it was over, not the kids.

Ukulele players: Sally said that anyone who wants to play both Tuesday and Thursday next week is welcome to. If you have your own ukulele, please bring it. Two reasons for both days practice next week: (1) practicing to play down at the West Townshend Pizza Night on Friday, January 12 and (2) the week after vacation there will be no ukulele lessons. Sally has meetings after school that week.

From Sally: Upcoming Events at the West Townshend Store. This Friday, February 5th, at pizza night there will be a poetry/spoken word open Mic. Adults and children are encouraged to read a favorite poem, tell a short story or do a skit, or just come and listen. On Friday, January 12th, there will be a music open mic at pizza night. She is hoping Windham kids can attend to sing and/or play ukuleles.

This week’s art class was the first one working with clay. There was a wonderful set up of two large tables with a board for each child to work their clay on. Each child started with a good size chunk of clay and made a pinch pot bowl to plant a seed in this coming spring.   First was working the chunk to get the air pockets out, then flattening the bottom of the pot on their board. They then pressed a finger into the middle of the clay and went on to form a pot.  The pots were all different with kids immersed in their creations. No one did just one. Our instructor was Brittany with help from Leigh and Gosha

Parents whose children go to the farm on Thursdays: They will continue to go mornings until February vacation. After vacation we may change to after school on that day. That will be decided soon. The younger children will continue to go on Tuesday mornings.

For parents who like to plan ahead: Mr. PJ’S fifth graders will be going to Keewaydin the week of May 2nd.

Below is an invite for Valentine’s Day:

The Community Hope & Action group of Townshend is partnering with the Calvary Chapel this Valentine’s Day to put on an afternoon of cookie and cupcake decorating at Townshend Village Pizza. This cupcake swap was such a hit with local singles, couples and families last year, the group decided to host it again. Anyone is welcome to bring homemade cookies or cupcakes to decorate and trade with neighbors. Coffee and tea will be provided. The pizza shop is located at 2041 VT-30, Townshend, VT 05353 and the swap will be held from 4-6pm. This event is completely free; we hope to see you there!
