Habits of Mind: “Safe, Responsible, Respectful, Ready to Learn”

Don’t forget. No school on Monday the 15thDr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Please join the Jamaica Community Arts Council and the West River Community Project in a celebration of Martin Luther King’s life and work at the Jamaica Town Hall at 5PM. See flyer for details.

They say you hear nothing good when you eavesdrop, but I did hear something that made me smile on Monday.   Sally’s kindergartners counted out loud to one hundred.  I just had to smile….

We accidentally happened onto a passionate pastime at recess during the cold weather.  We have a group of kids in Mr. PJ’s room that are better than good at putting puzzles together. Now they have progressed to a 1000 piece puzzle and are definitely into teamwork on these puzzles. So what about doing puzzles: you can’t cheat, it enhances memory, its problem solving in a logical way and it feels good to see the finished product.

In Sally’s room when it is time to clean up the room at the end of the day the little kids sing: “teamwork, teamwork, everybody loves teamwork”. Amazing how that little song moves them along quicker.  As they sing, they smile.

A small but tempting way for the little kids to practice writing their numbers is by rolling a dice. The number they roll is the one they write on their sheet under the right number on the top.

So we are doing our best to straighten out any problems with robo-call. At the end of the message it gives you a number to call if you want to be taken off the automatic calling system.

Skiing and snowboarding went very well on Wednesday. Perfect snow and weather.

Our second snow day now has made our last day of school Wednesday, June 13.

Bridget Coolbeth has told us that Valley Cares is closed to visitors, due to flu going around in the building.
