Habits of Mind: “Safe, Responsible, Respectful, Ready to learn”

The New Year brought some wintry weather. Most kids have been coming dressed for the weather. Please do be sure your child comes to school with hat/mittens etc. as they will be going out for recess unless it is colder than 10 degrees F. We took this week off from the farm to get everyone back into the groove of a whole day of school. It would have been pretty cold early in the morning at the farm with the temperatures down around zero each morning. We will be going to the farm next week, so dress warmly.

Tuesday, since Ivy was sick and Lisa did not want her going outside, we were nervous about no hot lunch. But the ladies came through big time. Amy brought in gluten and gluten free macaroni and cheese, Lisa sent cucumbers, ranch dressing and cantaloupe. The kids devoured everything and came back for seconds.  Thank you ladies. As always, the fruit and veggies were a big hit.

We started winter sports a week earlier than planned. Since we have more snow at the school Sally did not take her kids to Grafton Ponds. They stayed here and whipped up a batch of pretzels, and while the dough was rising they headed out in the sun to the back field to cross country ski.  Then back in to shape and bake the pretzels. In all seriousness, we have found that we usually have their undivided attention when we bake with them. It could be that they are so quiet hoping they will be the first one to crack an egg, or to add the milk and then start the stirring. They do love that.

The new art project is a mural of a farm. The finished art is on a fragile piece of styrofoam that is taking some careful planning to work on, so it will not be ruined. No kneeling on, no elbows, only a few kids at a time. Before vacation each child signed up for what animal or scenery they would be drawing and painting. They drew a sketch of it. This week the older kids painted the green background. Sally’s kids painted the blue sky. We are looking forward to the finished product.

There will be a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. at the West Townshend Country Store on Friday, January 15 at 6:30. The public is invited to participate. The children have been practicing some songs and any who can come will be singing that evening. Please let Sally know if your children can join us. Pizza starts at 5PM. Hope to see you there.

If you have not checked your school calendar lately, there will be no school for students on Monday and Tuesday, January 18th and 19th.  Teachers will be preparing report cards on Tuesday the 19th and they will be coming home to parents on Friday, the 22nd.

Finally, we received the All-School pictures from the Geskus picture company. They are coming home with the kids this Friday along with the newsletter. Remind them to pass on to you.
