Habits of Mind: “Safe, Responsible, Respectful, Ready to Learn”

Mr. PJ will be at GLAM meeting on Friday, October 27.

Weatherwise it has been a terrific week and the kindergartners are still enjoying the sandbox. The first week they ran as fast as they could to get there.  Now they settle in calmly to play. If the five of them are not congregated there, they are at their fort on the stone wall.

It is their first year here and the kindergartners are fascinated by the ceramic studio. Those little hands are all set to make a ceramic ghost, or a pinch pot and especially ready to try the sculpting tools accessible to them, the rolling pins, stamps, glazing brushes, all those new materials.

A special thanks to Craig Bailes who substitutes at the school and has been helping us build a shelter in the woods behind the school.

Mr. PJ’s class finally did their math chocolate chip baking class last Friday.   There were gluten free cookies, and questions about how do you cut this recipe in half, how do you double this recipe, how to measure out and keep track of where you are at in the recipe. It was a success, with the class sharing cookies with the kindergartners.  When the kindergartners heard they were getting hot cookies they moved faster than any time this year. And smiling!!!

Oh, almost forgot about school pictures last Friday. Most of the kids were anxious about their pictures beforehand and chose not to do anything except stand and watch others get their pictures taken while they waited nervously for their turn. (Probably the only day of the year they work at staying clean). The kids who were not nervous breezed in with big smiles and it was quickly over.

The West River Community Project is holding its annual Harvest Festival and chili cookoff on Saturday, October 21st from 2-5 pm. The Festival will take place behind the West Townshend Store and Cafe. Come join us for cider pressing, scarecrow building and other activities for kids. Pizza, baked in the outdoor oven, and other delicious food will be for sale. There will be live music and a chili cook off with great prizes. Some of our Farmers Market vendors will be there and we'll sell tickets and do the drawing for a raffle with prizes such as day passes to ski at Stratton and a night at the Grafton Inn. Don't miss the fun! The Windham ukulele kids will be playing there.  Sally will contact you to find out if your child will be playing. Lisa will be making small apple crisps with the kids that will be baked in the outdoor oven. It was such a hit last year that the adults made them too.

Trick or Treat and Halloween are just a couple of weeks away. Friday, October 27th is the Halloween party at the Windham Fire House, starting at 5:30. Judging is at six.  There are hot dog's to eat, cider to drink, a hay ride, musical chairs and a game of who can eat a donut off the string first.  See you there.
