Windham Elementary School Newsletter

Sept. 20 2013

“Safe, Responsible, Respectful, Ready to learn”

No school next Friday.  It is in-service day for the teachers.

Next Wednesday we will have a school grown veggie lunch. There will be cabbage, carrots, lettuce, kale, tomatoes, and hopefully potatoes from the garden for the lunch. So, there will be cabbage salad, tossed salad, roasted small potatoes. Lisa will make a gluten, egg free bread and we will make a regular bread to go with the lunch. The one food we are missing is some protein. If any parents would like to send in eggs to boil, cheese or canned tuna, we will add that to lunch.

Lisa Beshay asked us to put the following reminder about their upcoming Fall Festival:

The Windham School Parent Group is proud to announce the upcoming Fall festival at Windham Elementary on Saturday, October 5 from 10am to 2pm. There will be a yard sale out front, food for sale, raffle prizes, face painting, burlap sack races, tug-o-war, arts and crafts, live music (hopefully) and lots of fun.  We are still looking for volunteers to help out and also donations for the yard sale. A few people have offered to make food to sell, someone has offered a tent for us to use for the live entertainment, we have borrowed burlap sacks, a rope for tug-o-war, hula hoops and maybe a bouncy house. We still need raffle items, face paints, arts and crafts items (including any recycled items that could be used as such.)

If you own your own business or work for a business that makes a product or provides a service that would be suitable for the raffle, please consider donating.

Also, if you or anyone you know plays an instrument and would like to play live, please let us know. If you have any suggestions or would like to help in any way, please contact Lisa at 802-258-8585.

Thanks so much. Lisa

Our first soccer game (against Jamaica) started out slow, but perked up as our team remembered how to play the game. Lots of coaching from parents and the sidelines.

On the back of this newsletter is a copy of the soccer calendar in case you have misplaced yours.

Hello Windham County K-8 School!

Through the generosity of First Book and the VT Foodbank, we would like to donate books to your school!   Your school may use these books in any way you wish: in your library, for students, as giveaways/incentives, etc.  At United Way of Windham County’s Day of Caring volunteer service event on Saturday, community volunteers will be sorting/packing books for your school. You can expect a United Way delivery of approximately 100+ books to your school during school hours, by September 30. We look forward to resourcing your school with new books!

A smiley thing just happened. I was delivering  mail to the teachers rooms when one of our pre-ks said  “Gail, did you know that you can plant a seed as small as a tomato seed and it will grow a tree that is so big a car can drive through it! I asked him what kind of tree it was and he answered: a red wood. This was during book buddies, something we do once a week, pairing an older reader with a younger one. This shows there are results. Another positive about book buddies, is the younger ones feel they know the older kids and are not nervous about asking them for help if they need it.

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the great weather.
