Habits of Mind: “Safe, Responsible, Respectful, Ready to learn”

Cooking class tonight at 5:30 with Lisa Beshay at the West Townshend Pizza night. If it is raining, they will be cooking in the basement kitchen. Come and make fresh salsa and homemade tortillas

School pictures will be taken this coming Wednesday, October 5, starting at eight thirty. If you have not signed your child up or sent in payment for the pictures, please do so before Wednesday.

For the second year, the upper grades class had the pleasure of working with Julian Leon from the Vermont Energy Education Program (VEEP).  He is a former classroom teacher who comes to work with the students about concepts related to electricity and magnetism.  They did a number of hands on activities using magnets, a balloon for static electricity, creating an electron-magnet with a battery, nail, and wires, and other cool activities to show how these two ideas are interrelated.  The class will also be obtaining a kit from VEEP to further their understanding of these topics. Our students participate in VEEP, intended as a start to students becoming interested in designing solar power, wind power, or what engineers consider when developing renewable energy and electricity. Like Starbase that the upper class attends every two years, this involves thinking about science, and the future providing them with real-world applications of math and science. Both programs utilize instruction modules that can integrate Vermont state math and science objectives.

Soccer this week: Our team played on a perfectly laid out field. We did not win against Townshend, but the kids sure played hard and well. There was a great turn out of parents and family. Whether they win or lose it is important that they have an audience. Thanks for your support.

For the parents who have forgot to check their school calendar…we will have no school on Monday, October 10th.

On Sunday, October 16th from 2:00 to 6:00 PM the West River Community Project will hold their annual Harvest Festival. Come join them for cider pressing, a chili cook off, a potluck, live music and lots of fun kids’ activities. The festival is a benefit for Rescue Inc. this year.

For practice and at games Coach Perry requests that: Kids be at field by 4:00 for each game with cleats and shin guards on.  Water bottles are a must. The cups of water are not working. They forget which one is theirs and it adds up to a lot of litter. They need a snack whether it is before they start playing or during the break. Perhaps pack them something extra for after school???
