Habits of Mind: “Safe, Responsible, Respectful, Ready to Learn”

We had our second fire drill of the year on Wednesday that ended with a special visit by the Windham Volunteer Fire Department for Fire Prevention week! The students were able to witness a mock-drill with the fire engines driving into the school driveway with the sirens and lights working. The fire fighters then went through the school with their equipment on so the students could see what would happen in the event of a fire at the school. We then learned about what the engines carried and why, watched a fire safety video, had a chance to ask questions and then each student received a fire safety goodie bag to bring home.

On Monday, Sally’s friend Mary Fraser, spent some time with the students in the afternoon teaching them how to weave fish! We hope she finds a time to return to us later in the school year to teach us another basket weaving activity. On Wednesday, Betsy Thomason returned and made another book with the students in Sally’s class.

Green Mountain Orchards - Thank you to the following volunteers who will be assisting us getting the Windham students to Green Mountain Orchards next Wednesday: Jan & Ralph Wyman, Rory Rosselot, Antje Ruppert, Stormie Gordon, Jill Devine, Lisa Beshay, Susan Persa and Amy Carson. All staff and volunteers please arrive at Windham Elementary at 11:00 AM; we will plan to leave Windham Elementary at 11:15 AM so that we can have lunch at the orchard at noon. We will then participate in the activities that the orchard will have planned for us. All students will be either driven home or will return back to school for after-school care. Please let Sara know if your student will need after-school care after the Orchard trip, so that we can make sure they are dropped off at Windham Elementary and not at your home.

Ukulele practice will be THURSDAY, October 17th, next week after school and NOT Tuesday, October 15th because of parent conferences on Tuesday. It will be important for any children who are performing at the Harvest Festival (see below) on Sunday, October 20th to attend this rehearsal.

The West River Community Project is holding its annual Harvest Festival behind the West Townshend Country Store on Sunday, October 20th. There will be cider pressing, kid’s activities, a potluck and a pig roast! The event goes from 12-4:00 PM. The Windham Ukulele Players have been invited to play at the event around 1:45 PM. Children who have just started this year, may not be ready to perform quite yet, but Sally is hoping any returning musicians can join the Windham Ukulele Players. Please let Sally know ASAP if your child can participate -
