Habits of Mind: “Safe, Responsible, Respectful, Ready to Learn”

We would love to carve pumpkins with the students!

Anyone have any leads for donations of 18 pumpkins? Send any thoughts to Ms. Sara!

Mighty Acorns and Windham Hike

Our first trip to the Mighty Acorn program at the Grafton Nature Museum was enjoyed by all. Jay, our instructor, led us in a discussion about the season of Fall and what we can observe around us at this time of the year. A focus on the leaves changing colors ended with a story about a leaf and it’s cycle through the four seasons. After a short break, we took a hike up into the trails and the students were able to make a graph plot using a hula hoop and could sort signs of fall in their grid plots. Many chose to sort by colors of leaves but others chose to sort by items found (ie leaves, non-leaves, mushrooms, acorn tops etc.) After arriving back at school, we took advantage of the beautiful weather and took a hike from the school to Abbott Road - Woodburn Road - Cross Road and back to Windham Hill Road again. When we got to the school, Michael Pelton took us through the school trails he has been able to clear, make signs for and mark with yellow tags for the kids to use!

Fire Department Halloween Party

The Windham Volunteer fire department will NOT be holding their annual Halloween party this year because it would be unsafe for the kids. They instead will be hosting a Trunk or Treat at the firehouse.

October 29th from 5-7 PM will be the event.

Any families who want to do their trunk for the event please call Jan Wyman at 875-3373 or Gail Wyman at 875-4749.

Meadows Bee Farm - Young Farmers Program

On Thursday, our farm trip included a special surprise. On Wednesday morning at 6 AM a brand new calf was born! Her name is Rain! After visiting with Rain and her mom for a bit, the students started their chores. Sheep, chickens, turkeys, cows and the barn floor were all fed, watered and swept for the morning. We all then made our way to the teepee where we learned about the Abenkaki nation and why and when teepees were used. A roaring fire awaited us as we all circled around and came up with our own Native American names. Some included: Orange Mud, Falling Maple, Jumping Bee, Digging Trout, Playful Puppy, Pink Petunia, Jumping Trout, and Crafty Owl. We then shared in some yummy corn cakes cooked over the fire by Leigh! The ingredients were all from the earth and included: maple syrup, corn flour, wheat, and the Sea-90 salt.

JISP (Junior Instructional Snow Program)

Jan. 5, 12, 26; Feb. 9, 16; Mar. 9, 16, 23

The JISP information for this year has arrived from Stratton.  Given the current situation with no indoor facilities provided by Stratton, the program will be modified from previous years.

Mr. PJ will continue to coordinate the program and be the go-between for JISP participants and the mountain, but students will need to have their own transportation to the mountain and an adult to chaperone them, as no school staff will be at the mountain.

Students are expected to arrive at the mountain ready to ski or ride and not to enter the building, except for a bathroom break.  If families want to carpool or work together to split the driving and chaperone duties, that is up to them to work out.

All the information needed to sign up can be found in the email Sara sent from Stratton on October 8th.  Please let Mr. PJ know if you have any questions, or if he can be of further assistance with this process.
