Habits of Mind: “Safe, Responsible, Respectful, Ready to Learn”

Having fun in the leaves during recess (Lydia, Tucker and Jocelyn)

Fire Prevention Day

We had our second fire drill of the year on Tuesday that ended with a special visit by the Windham Volunteer Fire Department for Fire Prevention week! The students were able to witness a mock-drill with the fire engines driving into the school driveway with the sirens and lights working. The fire fighters then went through the school with their equipment on so the students could see what would happen in the event of a fire at the school. We then learned about what the engines carried and why, watched a fire safety video, had a chance to ask questions and then each student received a fire safety goodie bag to bring home.

Picture Day - October 20th

Remember to send back your picture order forms for picture day on October 20th. If you need a new order form, please let me know.

Outdoor Adventure

The students had their first outdoor adventure class with Craig Bailes and Sally Newton on Monday. Sally showed and taught the students how to identify the many leaves that come from the trees here in New England. Students learned how to identify the difference between a red maple leaf and a sugar maple leaf. Leaves were placed into a leaf press to dry and then can be pressed later between wax paper to keep. With the guidance of  Mr. B and Sally, the students then began clearing overgrown brush and dead branches from the entrance and trails leading to the outdoor lean-to. Safety lessons and instructions on how to use the tools that they would be using were given.  To end the day, students were paired up to mark out a forest plot using surveyors marking tape, stakes and yarn. These plots will be areas that students can observe during the school year and take notes on what changes happen (ie changes to forest floor, wildlife habitats, foot prints, etc).

Canvas needed: As the students finish their outdoor classroom lean-to, we are in search of anyone that might have and would be interested in donating a canvas that we can add to the outside of the lean-to. The canvas that is being asked for is the type that teepees/tents use for weather proofing.

Thank You’s

Thank you to Cindy & Bob Kehoe and Marie Hill Farm for the pumpkins for our Windham Elementary School students! We will plan a pumpkin carving day soon so that the students can carve their pumpkins and then bring them home as decorations for Halloween.

Also a special thank you to Londonderry Tri-Mountain Lions Club for the donation of extra masks to have on hand here at the school to continue to keep our Windham school students and staff safe.

Harvest Festival

The West River Community Project is holding its annual Harvest Festival on October 11, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm, behind the West Townshend Country Store, at 6573 VT Rte 30. There will be vendors, fresh pressed cider, kid's activities, chicken pot pies made with fresh, local ingredients, and more. Live music will be provided by the Woodpeckers, playing old time jazz and the Buzzards, playing bluegrass and country music. The event is outdoors, set up for social distancing, with a limit of 150 people. Masks are required.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Conferences were originally scheduled for next Tuesday, October 13th. In order to continue to be on the safe side, we will be offering conferences to those parents who feel they would like to touch base with either Sara or Mr. PJ via email, telephone or zoom. If you would like a conference, please contact us to schedule a time and a platform that is convenient for you. Given that we have only been physically in school for less than 20 full days, there may not be much to conference about, but we are certainly available to share what has been happening thus far at Windham with your student(s) since September. We are also always available during the school year for a check-in at any moment that you find you might need to touch base.

Everyone Eats

There is a voucher program now open to the towns in our area called Everyone Eats . Restaurants are supported to make food and people who need food are given vouchers to get food.
