Habits of Mind: “Safe, Responsible, Respectful, Ready to Learn”

We had a beautiful day at Putney Mountain last Friday for our annual all-school hike. As part of the hike, we took the time to start our nature notebooks for the year. Things that were noticed along the hike were holes in trees created from a Pileated Woodpecker, flowers growing along the path (Aster and Jewelweed), leaves changing colors and falling to the forest floor, a little frog, a tree downed by lightning, and sheep at the top of the mountain. After a wonderful lunch together, the Windham students chose to spend their remaining time playing hide and seek as a group before we started hiking back down the trail to the bus. Here are a few pictures that we were able to capture.

Thank you to the Mialkowski family and Rob Packard for the donation and use of the tents shown below. These two tents have made a wonderful outdoor classroom for us to be able to use during these unpredictable times.

We are tentatively planning on our apple picking trip to Green Mountain Orchards for the morning of Thursday, September 24th. Once all kids have arrived at school and screenings are done, we will re-board the bus and travel to Green Mountain Orchards. They are not providing wagon rides, or cider demonstrations, so this year it will be a shorter trip then normal. We will return to school to finish off the school day and use some of our picked apples to make applesauce for everyone to enjoy!

September Date Reminders:

September 23rd  - Remote Learning day

September 24th (Thursday) - Green Mountain Orchards field trip - an email will be sent a few days before the trip to confirm what the students should be prepared to wear on this day.

September 30th - Remote Learning Day

Remember students are only in school on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday’s for this month of September, so that a deep cleaning of the school can happen on Wednesdays. We will re-evaluate the schedule for the month of October.  Since it is just the start of the school year, and we are hoping that these remote Wednesday’s will only be temporary, we will not be touching base remotely with the students. Instead, they will be coming home with worksheets and/or books to work on during the day on Wednesday that will review material that has been taught in class. They should return the completed work on Thursday.

Upcoming October Dates

October 5th - School board meeting via Zoom

October 6th - Fire Prevention Day with the Windham Volunteer Fire Department

October 12th - No School - Columbus Day

October 13th - 1/2 day - Parent-Teacher conferences

October 20th - School Picture Day at Windham with Geskus Pictures
